Definition:

 

The medical physics section is located at Dubai hospital – level 11, this section serves all DOHMS Radiology and Nuclear Medicine sections.Therefore, our customers are identified as:

          Internal Customers: All DOHMS Radiology, Nuclear Medicine sections, and Laboratories whee ionizing radiation is in use.

          External Customers:

  • Patients revieve radionuclide diagnostic and therapy doses.

  • Inspection and licensing Private health sector at Dubai area.

  • Education organizations.

Hours of Operation

o   7:00 am to 3:30 pm (Sunday to Thursday)

o   Weekends ( whenever is needed)

o   24 hours on-call for In-patient Radionuclide therapy.

 

Comprehensive Service List :

Medical physics section includes 3 units, each unit has specialized services. The units are 

  • Radiation Protection Unit.

  • Radiopharmaceutical Laboratory Unit.

  • Medical Imaging Analysis & Processing Unit.

The services of each unit are shown below.

Radiation Protection Unit:

Radiation protection services available for internal or external users of radiation:

  1. Continuous monitoring of radiation doses incurred by workers using electronic dosimeters.

  2. Periodical operational surveys of radiation facilities in hospitals (radiology, nuclear medicine).

  3. Radiation measurements for different purposes: radiation safety, calibration…

  4. Gamma Radioactivity Measurements for In-Vivo (Patient Thyroid) or In-Vitro (Blood Samples).

  5. Safety assessment of medical facilities before commissioning.

  6. Acceptance Tests of medical imaging machines (radiography, fluoroscopy, CT, mammography, dental…).

  7. Periodical quality control of X-ray machines in radiology, cardiology and interventional radiology.

  8. Technical testing of radiation-measuring devices.             

  9. Design of radiation facilities (radiology, nuclear medicine, laboratories, Radiotherapy): Layouts, Dimensions, Structural Shielding, Safety Features…

  10. Inspection of private medical facilities (DOHMS licensing and inspection).

  11. Radioactive waste management (nuclear medicine, laboratories).

  12. Decontamination of surfaces, tools… (Nuclear medicine, laboratories).

  13. Emergency intervention in case of radiation incidents or accidents.

  14. Preparation of radiation protection educational material.

  15. Radiation protection training: Doctors, technologists, physicists.

  16. Radiation safety expertise (Specific Problem Solving, Safety Assessments, Technical Projects or Studies, Choice of Equipment, decision making in case of unplanned or abnormal exposure of patients).

  17. Research in the field of radiation protection

Radiopharmaceutical Laboratory Unit:

  1. Establish a radiopharmaceutical practice that embodies the scientific knowledge and professional judgment required to improve the safety and efficacy of radiopharmaceuticals which are prepared on daily basis and administered into large number of patients for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

  2. Advice on selection of radiopharmaceuticals and radioisotope generators.

  3. Supervise procurement, receiving and proper storage of radiopharmaceuticals and non-radioactive kits.

  4. Implement a hospital based radiopharmacy practice for the preparation and quality control of multidose radiopharmaceuticals and individual patient doses.

  5. Provide regular quality control tests for radiopharmacy equipment used.

  6. Provide a regular record keeping for radiopharmaceuticals and equipment used.

  7. Provide on the job basis training for the radiopharmaceutical unit, medical physics and nuclear medicine staff.  

  8. Implement an efficient radiopharmacy practice providing safety measures for radiopharmaceuticals prepared as well as staff members.

  9. Bring the facilities in line with international safety and quality standards of radiopharmacy practice (International, US and European Pharmacopoeias).

  10. Supervise the acceptance of new radiopharmaceuticals and equipment.

  11. Advice on regulations, policies and standards related to radiopharmaceuticals.

  12. Advice on new techniques and procedures, initiate clinical research related to radiopharmaceuticals

Medical Imaging Analysis & Processing Unit:

Develop medical imaging services, ensure quality of radiation tests in nuclear medicine section and participate in educational programs related to radiation medicine.

  1. Analyze, process, transfer and store medical images in the intra network of the Nuclear Medicine section.

  2. Manage medical information systems.

  3. Apply quality control tests of radiation and imaging equipment nuclear medicine.

  4. Develop and Implement in-vitro and In-vivo physiological nuclear medicine tests.

  5. Organize education programs in Physics of Medical Imaging in accordance to continuing medical education plans and residency programs.

  6. Develop initial and continuing software evaluation of nuclear medicine imaging and radioactivity measurement equipment. Ensure compliance of nuclear medicine equipment software with the international standards and accreditation recommendations.

  7. Develop and evaluate nuclear imaging techniques, algorithms, and methods for data analysis.

  8. Perform and analyze Nuclear Medicine imaging and radioactivity measurement equipment acceptance testing.

  9. Develop and manage the comprehensive Quality Management Program that monitors and evaluates nuclear imaging and radioactivity measurement equipment and processes to achieve optimization.

  10. Organize Education and training Programs related to radiation medical imaging.

  11. Research & Development programs in the field of Physics of Medical Imaging
